NATURAL THEATRE MEZZANINE PROJECT UPDATE, JULY 2010
Now the company wants to utilise all that experience to create an inspirational legacy for young people in the form of a unique street theatre school. At one point, having outgrown their current premises it seemed the company would have to move out of town in order to achieve this goal. However, Aaron Evans Partnership has come up with an ingenious plan that will see a large mezzanine studio inserted into the roof space of the historic building. This along with additional improvements will not only enable the Naturals to remain a focal point of the neighbourhood of Widcombe but will also create a buzzing production centre and place of learning for young people. The courses which will be provided in the centre (some of which are intended to be accredited as part of the national curriculum) are mostly aimed at those whose creativity has not necessarily flourished in mainstream education. The Naturals have found that their particular brand of theatre and the way they teach it engenders a remarkable increase in confidence and self-esteem amongst young participants. ‘The week has opened my eyes to another form of theatre. I want to thank everyone for the inspiration that I received during the week. I feel a lot more confident in my choice of profession. I cannot thank you enough.’ Work experience participant. ‘I had a fabulous time, learnt a lot and became more driven to pursue a career in acting.’ Fountain of Natural Youth participant. Total costs for the project are £210k of which approximately £160k has been raised through generous support from Arts Council Grants for the Arts, B&NES, The Roper Family Charity Trust, our own reserves and local efforts. In order for building work to begin on schedule and to gain release of the £50k from the Arts Council, the bulk of the money needs to be in place by October 2010. Thus we are appealing for donations, large or small to help us reach this goal. Natural Theatre Company is committed to presenting accessible, relevant and comic theatre in places no other company can reach (to quote the famous lager ad.) Please help them in their ambition to make the world a funnier place by supporting the Mezzanine Project. PANDA POWER! We're proud to announce that our new radio-controlled character, the Cycling Panda, has had its first outing. Christened Gordon, he wowed the crowds at BikeFest during the final of the Tour of Britain in London. Our resident boffins have produced this hilarious new prop in the form of a life-size radio-controlled panda. This very convincing cuddly creature rides a child's tricycle whilst interacting with a crowd - rolling his eyes, gobbling bamboo and he can even talk back when required! Operated by a hidden technician, Gordon is accompanied by characters such as a Cycling Proficiency Officer, who ensures he's a very safe panda whilst out on the streets! We have always used elaborate stage props for our indoor shows. Gordon originally provided pedal-power for Widow Twankey's magic washing machine in Greenwich Theatre's 2005/6 panto Aladdin, which was a Naturals' co-production.
