NATURAL THEATRE MEZZANINE PROJECT UPDATE

Bath’s award-winning Natural Theatre Company has been touring the world with its special brand of comic street theatre for 42 years. Last Summer they enjoyed a six month residency at the sensational UK Pavilion at Expo Shanghai as guests of the British Council.

Now the company wants to utilise all that experience to create an inspirational legacy for young people in the form of a unique street theatre school. At one point, having outgrown their current premises it seemed the company would have to move out of town in order to achieve this goal.

However, Aaron Evans Partnership has come up with an ingenious plan that will see a large mezzanine studio inserted into the roof space of the historic building. This along with additional improvements will not only enable the Naturals to remain a focal point of the neighbourhood of Widcombe but will also create a buzzing production centre and place of learning for young people.

The courses which will be provided in the centre (some of which are intended to be accredited as part of the national curriculum) are mostly aimed at those whose creativity has not necessarily flourished in mainstream education.

The Naturals have found that their particular brand of theatre and the way they teach it engenders a remarkable increase in confidence and self-esteem amongst young participants.

‘The week has opened my eyes to another form of theatre. I want to thank everyone for the inspiration that I received during the week. I feel a lot more confident in my choice of profession. I cannot thank you enough.’  Work experience participant.

‘I had a fabulous time, learnt a lot and became more driven to pursue a career in acting.’  Fountain of Natural Youth participant.

Total costs for the project are £210k of which approximately £160k has been raised through generous support from Arts Council Grants for the Arts, B&NES, The Roper Family Charity Trust, our own reserves and local efforts.  In order for building work to begin on schedule and to gain release of the £50k from the Arts Council, the bulk of the money needed to be in place by October 2010. We are appealing for donations, large or small, towards this project.

Natural Theatre Company is committed to presenting accessible, relevant and comic theatre in places no other company can reach (to quote the famous lager ad.) Please help them in their ambition to make the world a funnier place by supporting the Mezzanine Project.

MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL
30th March - 24th April 2011

Natural Theatre Company is returning to the famous Melbourne International Comedy Festival in March to perform their unique brand of street theatre, as the company celebrates its 40th year of making people laugh and the festival celebrates its 25th.

After two previous visits  they are honoured to be invited back to show Australian audiences some of their new characters. The High Street Bowling Club will be dressed in their crisp white outfits and create a bowling competition anywhere and everywhere. In contrast, the horribly unhygienic costumed Pigeon Poo People have the passers by wondering if they are bird-like people or people-like birds. Both pieces have proved very popular since they premiered in Bath last year and in true Natural Theatre style they will be engaging and entertaining on the other side of the world.

The comedy festival will also be treated to an evening performance of the successful stage show A Night at the Bijou – where the Naturals bring to life one of the ‘best’ horror B movie’s The Bride of the Monster starring Bela Lugosi. The beautifully renovated 1920’s cinema The Capitol Theatre will be the perfect setting for this performance. The aged (and odd) staff of the Bijou Cinema have been brought out of retirement, and with the added assistance from ‘smell-o-vision’ and ‘wet-o-rama’, recreate a traditional 1950’s cinema experience…including the popcorn!  Further details: www.comedyfestival.com.au

But don't feel left out if you're not off to Australia, as the Naturals will also be appearing at the Bath Comedy Festival, Sunday 3rd April, with The White Wine Arts Trail. Please see www.bathcomedy.com for further details.

Do you yearn for the cinema of the 1950’s? B movies, fag smoke clogging the projector beam, standing for the Queen at the end?    No?  Tough!  It’s back!  As Natural Theatre Company brings you:

A NIGHT AT THE BIJOU

The aged (and odd) staff of the Bijou Cinema have been brought out of retirement to shine their torches and tear your tickets one more time! So come and enjoy a night at a 50's cinema. Wear your best 1950's outfits, (prizes for the best dressed!).  Watch a real 1950's B movie. Sample 3D and Smell-o-Vision! Sample the usherettes! But no snogging in the back row!!
